Massage is a great part of anyone’s day. Whether you’re visiting us to relieve pain or stress, our massage therapists are here to give you a great feeling. With that being said, when receiving a deep tissue massage, does pain indicate a good massage or a bad one? Well, that all depends! There are many different modalities of massage offered, some of which are comforting and others that may not be as comfortable as you’d like. Speak with your massage therapist today to read more below.
THE RIGHT PRESSURE IS KEY
Massage should be comforting; however, if you made an appointment to have plenty of corrective work, your massage may not be as relaxing as you had hoped. Please note that this doesn’t mean you should be in pain throughout your massage! It’s up to you to communicate with your massage therapist; don’t worry, you’ll never hurt our feelings. Communication is key when massaging a client, and our massage therapists will check in periodically to make sure the pressure on point or if you need more or less to be comfortable.
DIFFERENT MODALITIES EQUAL DIFFERENT OUTCOMES
There are some modalities of massage that aren’t as comfortable as you had hoped; these massage techniques include trigger point therapy, myofascial release, muscle stripping and some deep tissue massages. Please keep in mind that this does not mean you should be in unbearable pain. Your tolerance matters and if you’re flexing your muscles because the pressure is too great to withstand, your massage therapist should release pressure. This is where communication is key!
COMMUNICATION IS KEY TO A GREAT MASSAGE
We don’t expect you to talk during your appointment; however, it’s vital to enjoy your massage that you communicate with your massage therapist at the beginning and during your massage. The amount of pressure matters. We want to know if you need more pressure or less to make sure you’re receiving the message you want.
IS IT NORMAL TO BE SORE POST MASSAGE?
Yes! If you received a massage that was correction focused, you shouldn’t be surprised if you’re sore afterward; however, this doesn’t mean you should be unbearably sore. Some techniques and massages cause a small amount of muscle inflammation and temporary soreness which should disappear after a few days.
